Short profile

  • (In Mathematics) taught in German.
  • Students can begin this programme whilst still studying the first two subjects as part of the polyvalent dual major Bachelor’s degree programme.
  • There is the ‘major variant’ (120 ECTS credits) for full teaching qualification and the ‘minor variant’ (90 ECTS credits) for teaching qualification at lower secondary level.
  • Ideally, students should begin whilst still studying their first two main subjects, in order to spread the programme over several years.

Apply here

Applications must be submitted centrally via the university. The application deadline is 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester. (Enrolment or transfer to higher semesters is possible up to approximately two weeks before the start of lectures).

Admission

  • Two-year programme taught in German.
  • Enrolment is only possible at the start of the winter semester; entry into a higher semester is also possible at the start of the summer semester.

Mathematics

The main subject option covers the same content as the MEd programme. In the minor subject option, a few modules are omitted, such as Probability Theory, Analysis II, Numerical Methods II and the advanced course in Analysis.

And after that?

Following the Master of Education, the practical training phase for teacher education provides comprehensive training to become a teacher at secondary schools.

Freiburg

Freiburg is a green city at the foot of the Black Forest, offering a wide range of leisure activities. The University of Freiburg not only has a long tradition in all areas of the natural and human sciences, but is also very active in research, as its research ranking shows. The Mathematical Institute, which hosts the majority of this degree programme, covers a broad spectrum of topics, from mathematical logic to machine learning.

Enrolment is only possible at the start of the winter semester; entry into a higher semester is also possible at the start of the summer semester.

Applications are handled centrally by the University. The application deadline is 15 July for students starting in the first semester (enrolment or transfer to higher semesters is still possible up to approximately two weeks before the start of lectures).

The entry requirement for the subject of Mathematics in the “Master of Education additional subject” programme is

  1. either a first degree from a German higher education institution in a teaching-related Bachelor’s programme for a type of teaching post as defined in the framework agreements of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, or in an equivalent programme of at least three years’ duration at a German or foreign higher education institution, the subjects of which do not include Mathematics
  2. or to be enrolled in such a programme ( for example, the polyvalent dual major Bachelor’s degree programme at the University of Freiburg ),
  3. or to hold a degree from a German university in a teacher training-related Master’s programme for teaching at grammar schools in subjects other than Mathematics
  4. or be enrolled in such a degree programme ( for example, the Master of Education programme at the University of Freiburg ).

Admission in cases 2. and 4. is subject to conditions. The Master’s programme in Education can only be completed once the teacher training programme in the other subjects has been completed.

International applicants must also provide proof of German language proficiency (Level C1).

All legally binding documents for the major subject option and the minor subject option can be found on the central degree programme website, in particular:

The supplements to the module handbooks specify for each semester the options available within the modules and the exact requirements for coursework, assessments, and examinations.

You can find forms, information sheets and similar documents here.

The ‘major subject’ programme comprises 120 ECTS credits and is divided into the following areas:

  • Subject-specific knowledge (90 ECTS)
  • Subject didactics (15 ECTS)
  • Master’s thesis in Mathematics (subject didactics or subject-specific knowledge, 15 ECTS)

This plan is merely a guide! The actual course of study can be arranged flexibly. Where possible, the course should be spread over several years.
There are no formal prerequisites for the mathematics modules, nor are they restricted to specific semesters. The introductory lectures in Analysis and Linear Algebra come at the beginning; the advanced lectures building on these are essentially independent of one another and can be distributed across the semesters as desired. Dependencies between the modules are described in the Module Handbook. The study plan options for the polyvalent dual major Bachelor’s degree may also be helpful for planning your studies.

The 'minor subject' programme comprises 90 ECTS and is divided into the following areas:

  • Subject-specific knowledge (75 ECTS)
  • Subject didactics (15 ECTS)
  • Master's thesis in Mathematics (subject didactics or subject-specific knowledge, 15 ECTS)
In the minor option, Master’s theses focusing solely on subject didactics are not permitted.
